Luxor is the largest archaeological site in the world. Present-day Luxor is the ancient city of Thebes, capital of the Egyptian empire for almost a thousand years. On one side of the river Nile there are Karnak and Luxor temples and on the other there are the Valley of the Kings, Colossi of Memnon, Deir el Bahari, the temple of Ramses III at Medinet Habu. This is the place where the pharaohs accumulated incredible riches so much so that Homer wrote that “only the grains of the desert sand outdo in quantity the wealth that is enclosed there”. |
