| | Xochitepec is a squatter community in central Mexico. The term "squatter" refers to the fact that most people who live there "squat" on the land without technically having the right to live there by law. They don't own the land, but they build houses and stores, and the land sort of becomes theirs by default. Much of Xochitepec is still agricultural (onions, long stem roses, sugar cane) but it is rapidly changing and growing. Because of the high percentage of squatters, the local government has a difficult time of providing the necessary infrastructure and support, so there are problems with sewage, water, electricity, poverty, etc. |
