Montreal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world (behind Paris) and the second largest city in Canada. The origin of its name came from Mont Royal, the mountain in the middle of Montreal Island, which was named by Jacques Cartier, a French explorer who discovered it in 1535. An Italian later translated Mont Royal as Monte Real, and hence Montreal.
Many Montrealers can speak both English and French, although French is the official language, as you can see that the signs on the street are French.
Montreal held two important world events in the past: Expo '67 and the Olympic Games in 1976.
It is a vibrant city with lots of festivals and events throughout the year, such as the Just For Laughs Festival, International Jazz Festival and International Film Festival. Clubs and pubs open to late at night. During my one week stay in Montreal, there were three festivals in different parts of the city that I happened to bump into! |
