A Million people but many animals too. | What me? One in a Million eh? How true!!! |
In 2007 it was officially announced that the population of Calgary had reached 1,000,000 people.
The majority of these people came from somewhere else, especially when you consider that 140 years ago there was no major settlement at the junction of the Elbow river and the Bow river.
Where is the somewhere else?
I believe you can name any Country in the world and there will be representative from that Country now living in the City.
A great City to live in, except the infrastructure has not kept up with the growth in population and the need for all forms of Service.
Multi Cultural, Multi Ethnic and Multi Lingual.
In my Intro I will stress the non human and non structural side of the City. I will note the green areas especially away from the City Centre and show you some of the animals one can still see within the City limits. |
| A Bald Eagle looks for lunch. |
| | Animal life close to where I live. I live about 14 kms from the City centre in a subdivison that is above yet close to the Bow river.
The subdivision connects to both sides of the Bow river and then on to a network of paved bike/pedestrian paths, that extend about 400 kms in and through the City.
In the south end of the city and within the city limits there is a large Provincial Park, called Fish Creek P Park. It stretches some 10kms east/west and is about 2 kms wide. This Park connects with the above mentioned paths along the Bow river and the Elbow river. |
I share the greens with the golfers. Great idea. The deer, the bald eagle and the pheasant were photographed within 4 kms of my home on several of the many walks I make into and thru the parks and green areas.
It has also been known for Black Bears, and Cougars to stroll into the green areas and sometimes into the subdivisions. They are soon tranquilized and moved back to the Rural areas. | | | A Pheasant struts around its territory. |
