Kloten, A Town, an major Arport or Both?

by dabidc - last update: Jan 12, 2007

Which came first Kloten Town or Zuerich Airport?

Main Church in Kloten, with countryview beyond.
Kloten, the Town has, I'm sure, been in existance longer than the Zuerich Airport.

However I am sure the airport has more people passing thru it eah day, than live in Kloten. It probably goes without saying that the majority of airport travellers have no idea that a small town lies to the south of the airport. Once inside the Airport complex, little thought is given to what is happening nearby.

I have stayed in hotels in Zuerich and made use of the airport mini buses as well as the train connection that takes about 12 minutes, from Hauptbahnhof to Airport . This time I was returning from the Bulle area and decided to spend a night at an Airport hotel and did stay at the Welcome Inn.

I also had an opportunity to walk around town to sample some of the hospitality both at the hotel and a few local places.

It is a quiet location there is no major noise from the planes taking off and landing tere is also easy access to any place on the swiss rail system , the station is just 150 m up the street.
A main preboarding area. For European destinations

A look at the Airport, a different world.

Travellers to places in Europe pass thu this area en route to the boarding gates, it is on two levels, mostly shops on the second floor and coffee shops and cafes on the main floor.

Both areas look out the vast windows on the left of the photo to the runway and towards Kloten.

A view of Kloten , the Town from the airport.

A hazy morning, always a concern that the flights will be delayed, but no problem today.

Pros:"Quiet, free shuttle bus from hotel to airport, close to residentail area, relax after a long flight."
Cons:"Off the beaten path for some, enjoyable to others"
In A Nutshell:"I would plan to visit again for an overnight."

You are correct; who would know about Kloten! I've been in the airport while switching planes and never even imagined this town. Thanks for the info. The hotel looks and sounds good.
