A Hillside and Lakeside city. It is a few years since the visit but the memories linger on, especially when the outside temperature in Calgary hovers around minus 15 C and the thought of heat is ever present in my mind.
Lugano is within about 3 hours of Zurich on a main rail line and also a major road system. Zurich is usually my arrival point when visiting the Alps.
Plazza Riforma is a busy downtown open area filled with cafes and restaurants all with a few tables outside in the sun. The Plazza opens out to the Lake Lugano, with views to Monte Bre and other surrounding hills. Note that Italy is just across the lake and Milan is about 2 hours by train from Lugano.
The hills not only surround the city, they are ever present in the city. The rail line and station are way up the hill and the ever present funicular helps one reach the station from the area close to the Plazza.
Otherwise the climb is steep. |

| | The Plazza gives a view of the Lake. On the other side of the Plazza there is a fountain and then the view across the gardnes to the lake.
It may be the sunny side of the Alps but the clarity of the air is not always the best, it could be humidity but it is not easy to see the surrounding hills. |
View of the lake with Lugano to the right. There are many places to walk to along the lake side, to sit at the many benches and gaze at the passing ferries and small boats and just as many places to take a bus to. Lugano is flanked by two hills that each have a funicular to get you to the top.
One in the photo is San Salvatore, is 912 m high, while the other one see the travel pages, is Monte Bre it is 925 m high. | | | S Salvatore across the bay. |

| Pros: | "Excellent centre to tour the area. Warmth and good food with a touch of Italian." | | Cons: | "Watch out for the hills, some high prices and not the best visibility." | | In A Nutshell: | "Good for a Fall holiday." |

chewy3326 Sat Nov 25, 2006 01:29 UTC Lugano seems quite different from the general view of a Swiss town! Great page, the architecture and the scenery there looks beautiful! Great photos! | Matyas Wed Oct 26, 2005 15:59 UTC nr5 tips there! I like very much those type of forests but didn't manage to take any walks around the town cause of the weather. I've got drenched at least five times in Switzerland during my stay :D | freya_heaven Sat Mar 12, 2005 18:51 UTC This looks such a beautiful area David, I very much enjoyed your page. The minature towns reminded me of the Model Village in Torquay! Great page thank you (~_~) | Gentleman75 Wed Jan 19, 2005 15:02 UTC Very nice page! I liked the museum with the miniatures. I think I have to visit Lugano one time. Great tips! |
