Getting TO/AROUND: The most frequented Tourist places are located on each side of the River Duna and virtuall across form each other. Hence the value in having bridges available to cross the wide Duna. There are 5 main bridges that help connect the frequently visited places of interest. Before I mention them I must add that there are other bridges available for general transport, by train and by bus, but the main ones that the tourist might see or use are thus. Margit Island Bridge. Located at the southern end of Margit Island, the bridge not only crosses the river it also gives access to the Island. The bridge carries a volume of ttraffic around the northern part of the inner ring road.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Lanchid or Chain Bridge was the first bridge built acrooss the Dun, prior to that ferries were used except in winter when the river froze, it was possible to walk over, The Spring and fall were no doubt more difficult and at times no crossings were possible. Several times plans were started but it wasn't until a design from some English builders that the bridge was finally built in 1849. It took another 4 years to build a tunnel under Buda Castle Hill, which allowed for better access to the west side of the hill. The guide book gives the tunnel dimensions as length 382 yards long, 32 ft tall and 32 ft wide, which are the same as the dimensions of the bridge. Thus allowing for the bridge to be pushed into the tunnel when it rains so the bridge does not get wet. All the bridges were blown up when retreating armies left the city in 1945.
