There are at least three popular places to visit as Tram # 2 drops you off at Kossuth Square. There is the Parliament , Kossuth statue itself and the Museum of Ethnography. The latter is one of Europe's largest and displays the traditional culture of the Hungarian people from primitive societies to modern life. The building was a former Royal palace.

Wander to the northern end of the Parliament past Kossuth Statue and it is possible to get a view across the river. The view here is primarily the northern end of Castle Hill and shows the tall spire of the Matthias Church. The river is in the foreground and the boats seem to ply the river frequently even in early October.

Not shown in the guide books but one of many statues or memorials in Budapest, is this one that appears to recognize the older people. One of the many wonders of VT is the fact that we can communicate very quickly and as I was writing this I had some great visits from Vters who live in Budapest helping me with lots of info. Thank you Eva and also Andras. In fact this statue recognizes Karolyi who was the leader of the Hungarian Revolution in 1918. It stands to the north of the Parliament, a little west of Kossuth Statue and close to the river embankment.

The walking tour took me in the general direction of St Stephen's Basilica and the next several photos are of places seen on that journey. Another monument, this one looking more modern, is near a park. In the distance is a tethered balloon above the shopping Mall at Nyugati. I have it on good authority, Gentleman 75 no less, that the statue is a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Russian forces.

I always enjoy taking a photo of the quiet areas in a city and ones especially that include some colour from flowers or the unusual activities. Amid the paths in the park, a crew is interviewing a person maybe for the evening news, maybe for some commercial. Who knows? It is all part of life in a big city.

A beautiful Autumn day and the people were attracted to the park. A simple scene as a couple walk with thier child along the paths in the two block wide by two block long park. Certainly many activities are available in the small area. In the centre a cafe with outdoor seating attracted some who just wanted to enjoy the ambience, sitting and talking or enjoying the morning.

The east side of the park has a large playgorund for children and it was busy when I walked through. Possibly some kindergarten facilities were close by. Maybe parents leave their children while working in the many offices around the square. Altogether a pleasant street scene in busy Budapest.

The buildings around the park are not excessively tall and thus do not make the park seem small. Several buildings could be apartments, however this one stands out as being somewhat important. Possibly there are consulates and other Government offices here, after all we are close to Parliament. The building is presently the home of the Hungarian Broadcasting Corporation. ( Thanks to my group of very helpful Hungarians for keeping me accurate)

St Stephan's Basilica is about four blocks or one metro stop from Parliament. In the four blocks I found many treasures of the everyday life in the citizens of Budapest and I walked above ground to see those details. I would have missed them by going underground. I found the interior of the Basilica to be very impressive and the following photos will show you some of that imposing interior. The church did have some visitors including tour groups but there did not appear to be the mob scene that I had once seen at In the churches in Prague. Indeed it was pleasant to stroll around and still recognize the church as a place of worship.
