The light coloured building in the back ground is the Na Plasti bridge. The upper level connects the castle ( off to the right) to the Castle gardens (off to the left) .
The lowest level permits pedestrain traffic to enter the town of Cesky Krumlov, by also crossing the river on the pedestrain bridge. The walkway connects the Parking area outside the castle walls to the old town centre, which is behind the photographer.
The river that meanders through the town is listed as Vltava, which could be the Vlatava, the same river that runs through Prague.
The old town centre built around Svornost Square is surrounded on three sides by the river. The castle is also surrounded on three sides by the river and one of its tributaries.
This type of natural defence is seen elsewhere in Europe, Bern in Switzerland and Durham in N. England are two examples. |
| | The castle protects the town. The castle stands high above the town, with a tower that affords even better views of the town and the surrounding area.
The small footbridge across the river is the one shown in the first photo, with the Na Plasti gate almost hidden by the tall tree to the right of the bridge. |
Red roof tops of the town centre. Again the Tower at the castle affords an excellent over view of the old part of town.
the streets and lanes are narrow and wind around and up and down as one walks from one bend in the river to the other and then up to the castle.
The castle stands so high and stretches a distance above the river as it acts as the protector of that part of the valley.
The castle was one of two built for the Rozmberks.
Way in the distance the newer apartments towers are visible as the town has spread beyond its original boundaries. | | |

Nemorino Thu May 15, 2008 08:15 UTC Hi David, this looks like a fine place to visit, maybe in the spring or fall when it's not so full. I'm still smiling at your explanation of how you love to be above [yes, that is why you love hiking the mountains so much]. Another stellar page. | matcrazy1 Wed Dec 20, 2006 09:58 UTC Great page and amazing photos. I am not surprised now that Cesky Krumlov is crowded in summer season. |
