There is an advantage in rising early and getting to the popular tourist places early before the crowds arrive. the parade took place at about 9.30 in Jrske square, which is at the east end of St Vitus' Cathedral, in the Castle grounds. This was to be the venue for visiting over the next 2 hours and for taking photos of the area. St Vitus' Cathedral is the largest in the Czech Republic and construction started in the 14th Century with completion in the 20th Century. The Cathedral is in the third courtyard of the castle grounds, with St the Old Royal Palace and St George's Convent sharing the Jrske Square at the east end of the Cathedral. The entrances to the Cathedral are from the Third Courtyard , the main entrance is to the north and the other entrance is below the tower on the south side.

At set times through the day there is a changing of the guard and this is done in a formal manner, with a parade bringing in two new guards and leaving with the two guards that have done their shift.

A monument of a different sort is the large sun dial on the wall of one of the buildings in the Castle grounds. The more I try to place it in the Castle area, the more I sense it was not on a south facing wall, hence it would not be in the best place to act as a time piece, based on the sun shining on the arm of the dial. I welcome any comments on this photo and my comments. One advantage of Vt is the ability to change text and or delete photos.

The main entrance to the Cathedral is well protected from attackers since it is located in the third courtyard from the main entrance to the Castle. It is difficult to see the full size and majesty of the cathedral becuse it is surrounded by other buildings on all sidesin the castle complex.

The Cathedral construction started in the 14th century and the window is typical of the many similar ones all across Europe from the Middle ages. The whole castle complex is a major tourist attraction and it is good to get there early especiall to vie the interior of the Cathedral, since it can be a zoo. It becomes more a house one must visit than a religious house. Tour guides are everywhere and there is little evidence of peace and calm inside the Cathedral. By early I suggest start at 9.00am when the complex is opened to the public.

The interior of the Cathedral is an interesting place to visit, the size is overwhelming and the height is something to cause one to consider the extraordinary abilities of the builders many centuries ago. How did they do that? Another example of a stained glass window.

The silver altar requires a special ticket to visit. The Bishops Throne is in the same area as the altar and its decorations. Another area to visit is the crypt and my notes are at odds, one says there is a grave to John Nepomunk, another place I note the Cathedral was built over a former church with the remains of a martyred St Wenceslas in the crypt of the new Cathedral.

Valdislav Hall is part of the Old Royal Palace and at times the knights brought horses up the majestic staircase into the vast hall. There is a viewing terrace on the south side which allows views across to the river and beyond to Stare Mesto. The terrace is to the right.
