Hallstatt, a hidden gem.

by dabidc - last update: Nov 30, 2004

Exploring a quiet road, we found Hallstatt

Hallstatt hugs the shore.
We had set off from St Gilgen to escape the two days of cloud and had headed south towards St johann in Pongau, had explored the entarncing lake south of Wagrau-in and then wandered to the northeast.

Following the less tarvelled roads we passed through Annaberg and later Gosau and then turned south to reach Hallstatt. The approach road took us into a tunnel and suddenly a parking area above the village.

It was time to explore. We climbed down a series of wooden stairs and came to the church with the charnel house. A glimpse and we decided we could find some place more pleasant.
Hallstatt and Hallstatter see.

Hallstatt and Dachstein beyond the lake

A picture perfect day for visiting and taking photos. What could be better in such a photogenic place.

Inside the Dachstein in the background there are Ice caves and also a cable car to take you to the higher levels for hikes or hang gliding flights to soar across the lake and among the mountains.

( see Dachstein page) .
Hallstatt square.

Shops, hotels and restaurants.

The village or town of Hallstatt is built on an alluvial plain deposited over the centuries by the Muhlbach stream that cascades from a steep hillside above the town.

High on the hillside isa Salt mine which can be visited , following a cable car ride and a walk to the entrance. The mining of salt has been carried on for many centuries.

Again a nice page on a breathtaking town! The thing about the tunnel with the time is gone now. I've driven through it for several times in july but never saw it!
