  • The capital of Tunisia. Busy city, something completely different from other cities.
Tunis is a well balanced mix between different influences - Arabian, African and European.

Tunis is not the kind of city you would want to spend a week long holiday. Bare in mind that Tunisia offers great holiday places. One day trip to Tunis should be enough.

Take plenty of time to go to the SUUQ (Arabic name for the market). This is the best place to shop for souvenirs. Don't forget to bargain!

  • Although life is very simple in inner Tunisia, Tunis, the capital, is a busy metropolis with new, modern buildings, like this one.
The main street in Tunis is named after theif firs president as Avenue Habib Bourguiba. It is exactly 1 mile long. It is streched from the edge of the lake "the little sea" to the entrance of the medina.

  • I just adore markets. It is one thing I always go to when visiting different places. It gives you a nice feeling of the local people and daily life.
The colours of fresh produce is amazing and I always seem to find a new vegetable or fruit. This market offer all sort of spices, fish (can't miss the smell), cheeses and live animals - turkeys, rabbits, chickens, even pigeons. One place I don't like to hang around....

Things To Do: TUNIS - Medina & Suq

  • Medinas once used their high walls as a shelter, a safe place to go to at night, to be safe of the intruders. The doors or BAB were closed for the night and everybody inside could have a good night sleep.

Streets in the suq are very narrow, so that the intruders had difficulties moving, they also had double doors at each end, so they couldn't escape. Hence the beautiful doors that can be found in Tunisia. They are beautifully carved, painted in different colours... a feast for the eyes. To knock at the door they often used a women's hand called Lucky Fatma Hand.

  • Mosaics from Roman times at Bardo museum are really worth a visit. So much work is put into these masterpieces. I liked the mosaics of food - vegetables and fruits that were eaten in Tunisia as back as 2000 years.

  • The ancient site of Carthage was located in what is today Tunisia. Carhage is located in the continent of Africa whert it is at one of its closest points to Europe (the island of Sicily). Due to its position, Carthage could control trade from the eastern to the western countries in Mediterranean.

Carthage was destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC. What is left of it are only ruins. it is hard to believe that this used to be the most beautiful and the richest sea port of ancient times.

  • Sidi Bou Said is such a charming little city that is simply unforgetable. It is not even a little city, is just one road, going up the hill that ends with many local cafe's overlooking the Gulf of Tunis and the city's marina. The houses are painted in white with blue windows and doors.
There are many craft shops along the hill and when at the end stopping at a local cafes Cafe des Nattes to sip their mint tea with pine nuts is a MUST.

  • The main craft here is pottery. The front of the houses have real piece of art facade made of ceramic tiles. The variety of the patterns is amazing.
The main attraction here is rhe Friday market, offering anything from food, pottery, clothes, spices and alive animals.

Excellent overview of Tunisia, you seem to have had a similar itinerary to us, it's nice to read about all these places again.
