Getting TO/AROUND: Virtual Tourists will find Barking Town easiest to get to from Central London by train.
On the Underground System - Locally known as the Tube - you will find Barking on both the District and also the "Hammersmith and City" Lines.
Visitors from Central London will arrive on either platform 2 (District) or 3 (Hammersmith and City).
Those returning to Central London can choose either platform 6 (District) or platform 3 (Hammersmith and City). Of the two, the District line is preferable because the service is more regular.
Barking is actually at the very eastern end of the Hammersmith and City line, which is quite handy if you fall asleep on the train. However on the District Line, you have to be more careful as services continue eastwards about another 10 or so stops as far as Upminster.
On "National Rail" (overground services), Barking station is served by both c2c and "Silverlink Metro" train services. Going west, trains go to to the City of London (Fenchurch Street) and if you go east, you can reach either Southend or Tilbury which are on the Essex coast.
The booking hall of the present Barking Station was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1961. (I was there to whitness it!) The station was given "Grade II listed building" status in 1996. This was because its unusual cantilevered roof was a pioneering piece of building work at the time it was built. This means that not only is it officially designated as being of special architectural, historical or cultural significance, it also may not be demolished, extended or altered without special permission from the local planning authority.
The station has nine platforms in all. It takes about 30-40 minutes to reach Barking Town from Central London by underground train.
