| | Florianopolis is the Capital of the State of Santa Catarina, and today is considered Brazilian’s Best Capital for Living (due its great Life Quality) the violence and poverty levels here are really reduced. The island’s first inhabitants were the People from the Azores Islands a group of Islands that belong to Portugal and its known for its fishing and agriculture. The population of Floripa (the nickname for the island) has also German and Italian in its origins.
Here we have 42 beaches and we have surf on at least 20 of them. Because of its varied coastline there’s almost always rideable surf somewhere. The best season for surfing is winter, from about Mid- April to Mid-November when consistent waves break with rare flat conditions or small days between swell upcoming.
There’s also good nightlife, with the womem population overcoming men’s by far. During summer the tourist invasion make traffic worse and acommodations full, the waves tend to be smaller even though it ‘s the place with best Surfing conditions in Brazil during this time of year (except from Fernando de Noronha, a small island further North). |
| | surf's up BREAKS in Florianópolis Legend The Island has more than 20 breaks where you can find good waves in almost any swell direction and wind condition. The East part of the island has the best and most famous spots, even though you can find excellent waves on both North and South Sides depending on the conditions. The roads have all proper indications and everyone knows the spots. There are few spots where during the Mullet fishing season where surfing is forbidden, ask locals to be sure about it.
Praia da Joaquina
One the best and most consistent wave in the Island. It is the capital of surfing in Southern Brazil, handles almost any swell, but the best conditions are E swell with NE wind or W wind. The famous left breaks from behind the Pedra da Careca, a small rock which stands close to the left side of the beach. On good days there’s some really long and powerful waves with several sessions. If you go further south down the beach there’s always good surfing spots with good lefts and rights.
At these points the crowd factor and hassle are reduced. Locals surf on the left side more often. If you’re here in Florianopolis you HAVE TO surf at Joaquina.Opened during Mullet fishing season. |
