Again it is so sad to realize that there were so many casualties so late in the war, when it was already over except for someone working up the nerve to surrender. (The penalty for trying to surrender was being shot or hung by the SS.)
One of the last battles in Germany of WW2 with huge losses of life on both sides. I believe the intention by the German Army was to break out and avoid capture by the Soviets hoping in the end to surrender to the Americans.
Your Halbe page provids interesting informations on WWII (Halbe pocket)! Didn't know the largest military cemetery on German soil is in this town.
