Peenemunde | Model of the original site |
Peenemünde is a village in the northeast of the German Island of Usedom. It is near the mouth of the River Peene, on the easternmost part of the German Baltic coast. It was used for rocket research between 1936 and 1945. The launch of the first missile into space took part in October 1942. The site was attacked by the RAF on the night of the 17/18th August 1943 but the victims were mainly foreign prisoners of war. Further raids followed but the production of the V1 and V2 rockets had already been moved to underground tunnels in mountains close to Nordhausen. |
