Hero's Square
The Castle Complex

Entrance to Statue Park (Szoborpark)

In some countries the people pull down and destroy statues left by the previous regime, and in this case who could blame them. But in this case enterprise has taken over and the statues left over from the Soviet era have been moved to a park. The park is on the outskirts of Budapest so no one can be offended but still allows those want too the chance to visit.

I'm sure I would like the carfree island of Margitsziget -- and also that statue park with the left-over Soviet-era statues. My one visit to Budapest was decades ago but made a lasting impression.

I don't think I would fancy visiting the Statue Park - have seen too much of this in my own country and the USSR. But Margharet Island sounds great and Gellert statue is so imposing. Nice updates. What a sad story of the man dying in the cold.

I saw your reply in the Budapest forum about the airport transport - your web link was most useful - thanks! The hotel you stayed in looks lovely! Marion.
