The first pier or mole which was 380 metres in length was completed in 1889 to protect the developing fishing port. It was not connected to the main land and storms still created a problem for the port. It was decided to lengthen the pier and join it to the main land. Work was carried out in various stages from 1897 to 1912 and the pier finally reached its present length of 1450 metres making it the longest mole in Europe. The light house was built at the end of mole in 1904.
It makes for an interesting walk and it has a number of benches to sit down and watch the various boats that ply the waters. There are a small number of restaurants and cafes that are converted boats at the shore end of the mole. Further round the mole there was a number of berths for some stylish yachts. The mole broadens out as you reach the end and you can walk around the light house and look at views across the bay.
