The Battle for the Seelow Heights

Map of the battle
Seelow is one of those small towns in rural Eastern Germany close to the Polish Border. Its name would be unknown but for the fact that one of the last major battle of WW2 took place in the area involving over 1 million men. The German Army, greatly out numbered and consisting of a large proportion of old men and young boys, inflicted major losses on the Soviet and Polish Forces. The battle started with one of the largest artillery bombardments by the Soviets of WW2, but the German Force anticipating this, were further back from where the shells fell. When the shelling stopped the Germans moved back and inflicted major losses on the attacking forces.

The losses once the battle was over. Sadly many were buried in hastily dug unmarked graves. Remains are regularly found and are given a dignified funeral. Munitions are also still being founds as well.
