As I was driving along the B88 from Rudolstadt to Jena I noticed a castle on top of a hill in the distance. I have not intended to visit the castle and had no idea what it was called or whether visits were allowed. I reached the town of Kahla and turned off to the right and eventually reached the castle at Seitenroda. A castle at Seitenroda was first built around 1200. I has been reconstructed a number of times and has had a number of uses over the years. It’s been a prison, workhouse, youth hostel, restaurant and now a museum. Towards the end of WW2, because of its vantage point, it was used for artillery spotting and as a result suffered damage after being fired on.

Lucky you to have found such an interesting castle and quite by accident! We have pictures of a castle in Germany that we passed by but have no idea what it is called.
