Off The Beaten Path: Eiskapelle (Ice Chapel)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Ice Chapel is about 6km from St Bartholoma. You follow the trail from the National Park Information Hut to Kapelle St Johann und Paul. Having gone past the Chapel you continue uphill through the woods until you reach the large avalanche snow field at the foot of the Watzmann's east wall. The ice chapel changes from year to year in shape and size. I got there about 11.30 hours and for 30 minutes I had the entire place to myself. Strong shoes or boots are needed. You have to return the same route and then try some fish for lunch back at St Bartholoma

Off The Beaten Path: Walking up to the Eagles Nest
  • Tip Rating:
  • As a rather unfit, overweight, lazy old fart I decided it would make a change to walk up to the Eagles Nest. I've done the bus bit several times. So I picked a July day when it was slightly overcast and set off for the top. The road for walkers travels a different route to the coaches and only one vehicle passed me on the way up as well as only one person. Shows it's a popular walk. It took me 2 1/4 hours to reach the top which was cloudy and cold. After lunch it took a another 1 3/4 hours to get back down. I was nackered afterwards but felt I had achieved something by doing it. I would suggest picking a cool day and take plenty to drink.

Off The Beaten Path: AA gun emplacements

  • Berchtesgaden - Anti-aircraft gun bases
  • Anti-aircraft gun bases

  • Though thousands of people walk past these pieces of concrete when they walk around at the top of the Eagles Nest, but their purpose was more sinister as they were concrete bases for anti-aircraft guns.

Off The Beaten Path: Lift to the top
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the end of the second world war the Americans were in occupation of the area. The lift takes you up the final 407 feet to the Eagles Nest. At that time only officers could use the lift. All other ranks had to use the footpath to get to the top.

Off The Beaten Path: Entrance to the tunnel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Entrance to the tunnel which leads to the lift for your journey to the Eagles Nest above. The entrance has not changed from when it was first built in 1939.

Off The Beaten Path: Tunnel leading to the lift for the Eagles Nest
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the tunnel which leads to the lift for the ascent to the Eagles Nest. As you walk along the tunnel there is echo of your footsteps and it easy to imagine the sound of jackboots marching along.

An interesting place to visit, now that it is harmless! Sounds like you managed to get some good exercise while there. Thanks for the interesting photos of what is left of the Berchtesgaden.
