Like all capitals in the world the price of a hotel room can be expensive. I choose this hotel for 2 reasons, one it was a reasonable price and two as I had a hire car; it was situated very close to the Berlin Ring Road, which saved on parking charges and travelling time. The rooms were comfortable and clean, the buffet breakfast more than adequate for all tastes. There is a small bar for those who wished to partake but the restaurant was only open for breakfast in the mornings. It is possible to have food delivered but there was a couple of takeaways in the area serving pizza or kebabs, plus a bar and supermarket. I had a room on the ground floor, at the side of the hotel, and there no problems with noise, in fact you could hear the birds singing in the morning. I decided to use this hotel again in October 2007, but this time I was using public transport. Nothing much had changed at the hotel except there are now 2 free PC's in the reception area. The prices and service were as good as before. This time I had a room at the front of the hotel facing the street and noise was not a problem when the windows were closed, it may be more of a summer problem. The #50 tram stop is across the road from the hotel which has connections with the S & U station in Pankow. There are a numerous places to eat in and around the train station in Pankow during the day of evening.
Unique Qualities: This is one of the cheaper hotels in the Berlin Area though it is located in Pankow to the north of the centre. It is not a problem as the #50 tram stops across the road and runs every 10 minutes and at the end of the day you have to travel to the various sights located around the city. Whilst there I only only noticed 1 other english speaking couple and the clientele was mainly middle aged German couples, though the staff on the reception desk speak excellent English. This is a good value for money hotel and though not in centre it is well worth a few minutes added to your journey time to save a considerable amount of money. The hotel now offers a no breakfast option at a lower price. The TV service now includes Sky News & BBC News 24.

The Hilton Hotel is fairly new and has a quiet central location with all the main tourist sites within walking distance, and I was fortunate enough to have a room over looking Gendarmenmarkt with a large window. The standard rooms come with mini bar, room safe, direct dial telephone, internet connection and kettle with various drinks and the rooms are of a reasonable size. The well lit bathroom comes with a bath, shower and hairdryer, as well as the usual equipment. On arrival some cake and chocolates were provided and some fruit halfway during my stay. The pay for view movies were expensive, not recent and are available on dvd. I tried the large swimming pool a couple of times and was lucky one day to have it to myself for 20 minutes. The breakfast choice is vast and includes traditional fry up and with choice of types of cooked eggs. The best part was the fresh fruit salad. If you only eat a small amount for breakfast I would suggest eating somewhere else. As the cost of breakfast is 23 euros its only value for money if you pig out and its easy to spend a couple of hours trying the different foods. There is also a choice of different restaurants in the hotel or close by in the area. The Stadmitte underground station is conveniently just outside the front of the hotel for the U2 line though you have to walk about 400m for the U6 line. The hotel aways had plenty of friendly staff available though the restaurant for breakfast and the reception appeared busy at peak times.

The Pankow Hotel is located in the northern district of Pankow. There is a convenient tram stop just outside the hotel. It is an unpretentious hotel with clean and airy rooms. The rooms are cleaned daily and the towels and bedding changed on a regular basis. There are direct dial telephones in each room. Though there is a 24 hour reception desk you are allowed to keep you room keys which also give you access to a side door if you arrive back late. The night bus stops outside the hotel. The hotel even provides details of the night bus & tram services as well as tourist information. The buffet breakfast is the usual offering for German hotels, but there is enough variety to suit most tastes including some hot food. You now have the choice of not taking the breakfast and saving 7euros. The only two things that may cause guests problems are the traffic/tram noise if the windows are left open and the hotel only accepts cash for payment. The hotel does offer simple hot and cold drinks that can be purchased in the breakfast room. It now provides cold drinks and snacks in the rooms. There is a simple café 100m away that provides the usual offering of kebabs, pizza & chicken, some English spoken. Across the road there is a 24 hour garage where food can be purchased and there are supermarkets in the vicinity. Though the hotel is out of town I timed it one day and it took me just 18 minutes from getting on the tram outside the hotel to getting off the underground train at Alexanderplatz.
Unique Qualities: The staff at this family run hotel are very friendly and go out of their way to help you have a pleasant stay.
