Restaurant Name: Eiscafe Fantasia del Gelato

I spotted this crowded Eiscafe in a shopping centre in Spandau on a Saturday afternoon. As I sat there eating a delicious ice cream from the large selection and drinking a coffee with lots of cream, I reflected that this type of café would not exist in the UK. I’m not sure why but ice cream parlours seem to have fallen out of favour and have closed in the UK. Smoking was allowed in the premises and this is now banned inside of buildings in the UK. There were a number of customers with dogs and that would be frown upon in the UK. The staff were friendly, smiling and attentive, and though the café was crowded they never gave the impression of wanting to rush you out. Alcohol was on sale, and no one was binge drinking or fighting.

Restaurant Name: Konnopke’s Imbiss

Konnopke’s Imbiss is a Berlin ‘institution’. It opened for business in 1930 serving fast food to night workers. It continued in business after WW2 and the arrival of the GDR. It claims to have invented currywurst by accident in 1960. For those who have never tried it, it consist of a special type of sausage, a spicy tomato ketchup sprinkled with a curry powder. It is Reputed to serve the best currywurst in Berlin and judging by the continuous queue outside its premises this would appear to be true. Having tried one for myself it certainly tastes very nice. A currywurst and a roll costs 2eur, a currywurst & fries 3.10eur.

Favorite Dish: Currywurst and fries, with mayo on the fries.
