Dachau Concentration Camp

Dachau Concentration Camp

Bleak view from a hut window
I first visited Dachau Concentration Camp in the early 1960's, though your memory fades with age I'm sure I remember it still had a number of the original huts which were home at the time to refugees and part of the camp being off limits and contolled by the Americans.
After getting in touch with the Archivist at Dachau I discovered that I was right. In the early 60's the museum of the Dachau memorial site didn´t exist, it has only been opened since 1965. In the months before the opening of the memorial site, the barracks where the refugees lived from 1948 had been demolished and two barracks have been rebuilt as an example. The US troops gave back the parts of the buildings which they owned there in the 1972. In 2003 the exhibition in the museum has been renewed and a new footpath and entrance to the area has been opened.

The huts have all been pulled down except for one which have been perserved. All that now remains is the foundations where the huts once stood.

Beds

These are some of the perserved beds from the camp.

I visited one December with snow cover and it was freezing - not as cold as when I visited Auschwitz though but good for getting a glimpse of what the victims had to endure - frightful what humans do to become worse than animals!

The crematorium leaves no doubt as to its purpose. The International Memorial says it all I think. Never again!
