LA - The endless city

by Shakermaker - last update: Feb 26, 2005

I've been in LA 6 times. Most of them just to visit but I was also there working for a little while and also studing.
Having been there so many times makes me feel like a little more than a tourist when I visit cause I can really get around easily and feel very comfortable.
The first time I went to Los Angeles was in 1999. Since that time to today, the way I see the city has changed several times. The first time I went, I completely fall in love with the city, but as the years went by and I experienced just a bit of the "LA Lifestyle" I also had the chance to see the downsides of this city. Stil, I like it very much and hopefully I will continue to visit it, because with its upsides and downsides it is a unique city and nowhere else in the world you can find a place even similar.
An almost empty freeway for LA standards

Understanding what Los Angeles is

Los Angeles is a county that has around 8 million inhabitants. Inside LA county you will find the City of Los Angeles (with over 3 million), the City Beverly Hills, the City Of West Hollywood, the City of Santa Monica and a lot of other cities. All together they form what everybody calls LA. Of course, all the cities are one next to each other so you don't even realise when you change cities (there are signs that tell you though). Each city has it's own police, schools and major (and I'm sure they have a lot of other things that I don't know).
A lot of freeways cross LA and connect all the cities, this is what gives this city such a particular feeling. Los Angeles doesn't feel like a city at all, it's different than other cities like San Franciso, New York, etc in a way I find that fascinating.
When you are in Los Angeles you get the feeling that you are in a movie, specially if you are from another country.
Even the cops sometimes act like if they were movie stars, they will do a big show for any little mistake a driver does, let alone if there is a robbery or something like that. Anyway, they get the job done...mostly.
