A Quick Visit to Dubrovnik

Ancient Walled City of Ragusa

Dangerous seas outside the wall and safety
My tour guide was my dad, a Croatian national, but not a resident of Dubrovnik. He tells me Dubrovnik was known pirate times as Ragusa. You can imagine friend and foe trying to access the high walls of the city by ship. We visited on a wet and cold autumn day and the seas were looking quite unwelcoming as well.

Walking the Wall

The old city is completely surrounded by a high fortified wall, still in tact on all sides. A walk around the wall is a must for visitors.

Walking within the wall

The city within the wall is also largely in tact, although it has been under fire in modern warfare, so some buildings remain in ruins. The city is still functioning as it has for centuries, with houses still lived in, shops trading (including one of the oldest pharmacies continuously trading), churches and offices going about their business, and a small but busy market square. Streets are narrow and often involve steps, so are not normally trafficable by vehicles. One old man we met, trudging up steep steps with his groceries, told us he had been walking up these steps for over 80 years.

Pros:"Fantastic sense of history and adventure."
Cons:"Accommodation is expensive for Croatia, difficult to navigate the streets around the old city by car."
In A Nutshell:"Come with your walking shoes and enjoy the adventure."
