Spiral Tunnel

On a day excursion the tour bus took us to The phenomonen called The Spiral Tunnel which was William Cornelius Van Horne's "temporary solution" to the problems posed by the grade of The Big Hill was finally rectified in 1909 with the completion of the Spiral Tunnels. These two ingenious tunnels combine to create a figure eight deep within Mt. Ogden and Cathedral Mountain. This doubles the length of the line on the Big Hill and reduces the overall grade.
