"Southwold" Southwold by joanj
Southwold Travel Guide: 24 reviews and 55 photos
While staying with our son in Ipswich we decided to explore round and about and visited Southwold to see the new pier.
I quote from Sir John Betjeman :- "Piers provide a walk on the sea without the disadvantage of being seasick, and are havens of fresh air and freedom which we can ill afford to lose".
History of Southwold Pier
Past and Present
The first wooden pile for the original Southwold Pier was driven on October 2nd 1899 and when completed in 1900 the pier extended to approximately 810ft. with a T -end.
The main purpose of the pier was as a landing stage for the "Belle" steamers that would bring holidaymakers to the town. The original pier pavillion, constructed of timber, was replaced in 1936 with the two storey pavilion that exists today.
In 1934 the T-end was swept away in a violent storm and was never replaced. During the war years the army sectioned the pier as protection against German invasion and shortly after this a sea-mine blew away another section. These gaps were repaired in 1948, however, in 1955 the structure was struck by a severe storm, which took away a large part of the pier. Another storm in 1979 reduced the length of the pier even further.
In l998 it was decided for safety reasons to close the pier to the public.
When Chris and Helen Iredal purchased the pier in l987 it was in a sorry and neglected state, however in l999 they started work on building a new Southwold Pier.
The construction was well under way with three of the four Pier Buildings completed, when His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester performed the grand opening ceremony on July 3rd 2001.
February 2002 saw the completion of the T-end extending the new Pier to a length of 623 ft. With the construction of the landing stage complete Southwold can now welcome Britain's only seagoing paddle steamer the P.S. Waverley and its sister ship the M.V.Balmoral.
