The Rotorua region is situated on a volcanic rift which stretches in a 200 -km (124 mile) line from White Island off the cost of the Bay of Plenty to Lake Taupo and the volcanoes of the Tongariro National Park in the Central Plateau of the North Island.
This geo thermal field is just outside Rotorua, and it was a strange experience travelling to this spot to see steam rising from the ground/grass etc. through the tiniest of holes/cracks.
It was a little scary too, knowing the force that was working therein.
