We stayed with friends here in the city after a 5 week tour of North and South New Zealand ( a cricket tour with plenty of sightseeing included).
This picture was taken from the air when decending to Hawkes Bay Airport.. My friend lives by the 3rd Norfolk Pine from the right.!! along the beach.
New Zealands worst earthquake tragedy was on 3rd February 1931. Devastation was caused by this quake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter Scale.
What the shock did not destroy in Napier and neighbouring Hastings, fire did. Napier was closest to the epicentre, and heroic deeds were performed by rescuers and by naval personnel from a sloop, the HMS Veronica, which happened to be in the harbour.
The city was rebuilt in Art Deco style, and is well known internationally.
