Home of the Crocodile Hunter

Being an avid viewer of the late Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) as we were so near, staying in the Gold Coast Region, we took the tour up to Beerwah and Australia Zoo. We were not disappointed at all. The layout for the animals is fantastic, they really are in natural habitat.
The kangaroo's let you touch them, and we took some wonderful pictures of wildlife at the zoo.

The crocodile shows were fantastic, and right in the middle of one show, Steve himself came along, and spoke to us all on a microphone.

I thoroughly recommend a trip here, we spent over 5 hours, but could have stayed longer. Well worth a visit, and I tell my friends over here in the U.K. I have seen Stevie babe in the flesh!!

I may update this section when I have more time, so keep a watch out for more about Australia Zoo, and perhaps some pictures
.

Lazing in the Sun

At Australia Zoo, notice the white Kangeroo, was informed by the keepers that it is not a true albino, just without certain pigmentation.(no pink eyes etc)

Giant tortoises at the zoo, with plenty of room for them in the enclosure.

Update :
In our local paper dated Nov. 16th 2003, it states that Harriet, one of the tortoises seen here, is now 173 years old.

Harriet was taken from the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean during Darwin's voyage. She was brought back to England in the 1840's but was later transferred to the Australian Zoo.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Animals welfare come first in this zoo, plenty of space for them in as near natural habitat as can be provided. Visitors too are well catered for, with plenty of viewing platforms to see the croc shows.
