The little town known as "Old IJsselstein" has become our home
away from home. We have become close friends with a family from
IJsselstein, and we enjoy returning every year to visit.
IJsselstein is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the
province of Utrecht. IJsselstein received city rights in 1331.
The city has an old town, surrounded by a small canal. There was
a castle in IJsselstein from 1300 to 1888, but only the tower has
survived. The Oude N.H. Nicolaas Church was founded in 1310.
Inside the church there are two mausoleums:
Family of Gijsbrecht van Amstel - 1350
and grand-daughter, Aleida van Culemborg - 1475
There is another neo gothic R.K. St. Nicolaas Church 1885 - 1887.
Restoration was completed in 1972, and Pope Paul VI gave the
church the formal title of "Basilica Minor" in 1972 ......

Funny page of one out of two Dutch IJsselsteins! What's the connection with this village? And tip for next time: leave the Amstel and Heineken, drink Grolsch! Many greetings, Paul
