The little town known as "Old IJsselstein" has become our home away from home. We have become close friends with a family from IJsselstein, and we enjoy returning every year to visit.
IJsselstein is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. IJsselstein received city rights in 1331.
The city has an old town, surrounded by a small canal. There was a castle in IJsselstein from 1300 to 1888, but only the tower has survived. The Oude N.H. Nicolaas Church was founded in 1310.
Inside the church there are two mausoleums: Family of Gijsbrecht van Amstel - 1350 and grand-daughter, Aleida van Culemborg - 1475
There is another neo gothic R.K. St. Nicolaas Church 1885 - 1887. Restoration was completed in 1972, and Pope Paul VI gave the church the formal title of "Basilica Minor" in 1972 ......
