The tiny green village of Marken is located some 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Amsterdam and was separated from the mainland in the 13th century during the formation of the Zuiderzee.
The small island lies about 1.5 miles (2.5 km) offshore and is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The houses built on stilts are grouped around a small harbour. The island has retained much of the atmosphere of past days.
During the tourist season the residents enhance this effect by dressing in traditional regional costumes ......
