Nieuwegein - Utrecht Province Nieuwegein is a municipality and a town in the central Netherlands. It lies about 7 km south of the city of Utrecht.
It borders on the Lek River in the south, n the other side of the river is Vianen, and to the west lies IJsselstein, to the east is Houten.
The modern day Netherlands are divided into twelve provinces (provincies in Dutch). A Dutch province represents the administrative layer in between the national government and the towns. Utrecht is listed as the smallest province of the Netherlands, and is located in the center of the country.

Nieuwegein was formed on the July 1, 1971, when the former municipalities of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk merged. The new town was built for the expanding population of the city of Utrecht, and has grown rapidly.
Nieuwegein is surrounded by three Motorways (Dutch: Autosnelweg) The A2, the A12 and the A27. There is a light rail line to Utrecht. There is a pedestrian ferry across the Lek to Vianen.

|  | Rijkswaterstaat Boats Nieuwegein is also a regional station for the patrol boats of the Rijkswaterstaat that patrol all the canals and waterways in the Netherlands.
They conduct rescue, all size boat inspections from the smallest pleasure boat to the tankers that travel the canal system.
Every year when we visit, Al spends a day out on the RWS 59 with his friends, Captains in the Rijkswaterstaat ......

Roggeveen Sat Oct 22, 2005 21:12 UTC Hi, Very nice to put Nieuwegein on the tourist map. It has no particular tourist attractions, but your trip with Rijkswaterstaat must have been very interesting. I am also planning a Nieuwegein page, if a find some time. |
