Very Historical City

Brussels At Night

Brussels is best known as the European Capital as it is home to the UN,
however one shouldn't forget that Brussels is also the capital of beer and
one of the best capitals in Europe for museums, with the likes of the Museum
of Natural Sciences, the Museum of Ancient Art, Museum of the Modern Art
and many others.

Brussels is a city full of places to see, places to visit, places to drink in and
places to eat at. A day-trip will never be enough to see the entire city and
what it has to offer. As a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, Belgium also offers
an enlightening nightlife and life experience on the real beer.

Manneken Pis

The Manneken Pis

Manneken Pis, little guy peeing, is a
Brussels landmark. It is a small bronze
fountain sculpture depicting a little boy
urinating into the fountain's basin.

There are several legends behind this
statue, but the most famous is the one
about Duke Godfried II of Brabant. In 1142,
the troops of this two-year-old lord were
battling against the troops of the Berthouts,
the lords of Grimbergen, in Ransbeke,
currently Neder-over-Heembeek.

The troops put the infant lord in a basket
and hung it in a tree, to encourage them.
From there, he urinated on the troops of
the Berthouts, who eventually lost the battle.

Another legend, in the 14th century, Brussels
was under siege by a foreign power.

The city had held their ground for quite some
time. The attackers had thought of a plan to
place explosive charges at the city walls.

A little boy named Juliaanske from Brussels
happened to be spying on them as they were
preparing. He urinated on the burning fuse
and thus saved the city ......

Getting Around

The best way to visit Brussels would be
by foot and public transport, particularly
buses and trams, as it will enable you
to see things you may not by using the
underground.

Also don't forget to look down the small
roads and alley ways, because you never
know what they might hide ......

I've often wondered about the boy peeing in the street...OK, so he peed on the fuse. Guess I'll go with that one. :-)
