I was working in Malaysia and was asked to go to Beira to do a small work project loading pipes onto a number of cargo ships (see www.pipetransport.com) I had finished a 24 hour shift.....had a ton of beer and about three hours sleep!!!!!!!! and arrived in Jo'burg and was taken on a transfer by my company rep. then on to Maputo.................
It was a massive culture shock to see the locals bare foot and the general run down - ness of the place.....I have since found out about the civil war in Mozambique and have become to admire it's people so much.
Spent the night in a small hotel with 20 rooms.........awoken at 5am and told to get to airport! No time for breakfast.......driven to the airport in a trahed old (British) Land Rover........it was very scary!!!!.........
arrived at airport. No-one to meet me. waited for an hour.......showed a local taxi driver my fax......he was very helpful......I had no local currency.......he eventually dropped me at the HQ of Sena Sugar SARL......all walkie talkies here and then An Aussie guy put me in his 4x4 and took me BACK to the Airport where I met Peter Rennison who is a great guy and we caught ANOTHER flight to Marromeo .
A few fly pasts to check there were no sheep or children on the landing strip! (honestly!) a very bumpy landing onto the grass runway........and off to my 'digs' in the SENA sugar camp.
- Pros:very very friendly, cheap, spider bites I got to my face
- Cons:very undeveloped, but some good places
- In a nutshell:deolate. But still interesting
