A Perfect Day in Lake Geneva

On Wednesday, July 29, 2009, my friend Mickey [Michelle] and I decided to drive to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, for the day. It was a picture-perfect day with sunshine, cool breezes, and mid 70's temperatures. The trip from Libertyville, Illinois, via Route 50 was rural and rustic in scenery.
Thank goodness we went during the week because in the summer, Lake Geneva is a magnet for family vacations throughout the area and as far away as New York. We were most impressed with the crystal clear water, the friendly locals, and the much improved offerings for tourists.

Chicagoans have summered in Lake Geneva since about 1836; thus, it has been dubbed as "The Newport of the West".

It's a fact that you won't run out of activities or good food when you visit.
There are numerous water sport activities; several different cruises to take; there's a 21-mile public path that encircles the shore of Lake Geneva; from experience, I know that it is a golfer's paradise [I've golfed at Grand geneva, Abbey Springs, and a few other close by]; concerts of Music by the Lake; great shopping to experience; a dip at the Lake Geneva Beach or in one of the pools of a hotel....the list is as endless as your imagination!

I've been in Lake Geneva many times over the years and will be adding more restaurants and hotels as soon as I find my information in some hidden file that I've saved.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Close to home, clean clear lake, historic downtown
  • Cons:Traffic and parking
  • In a nutshell:A delightful small town with great shopping, excellent restaurants, and a magnificent lake

Hi Dee, glad to see you online. I notice that the In-Town beach in Lake Geneva is on Wrigley Drive. So the Wrigley family seems to have been present in Lake Geneva as well as Chicago. From your photos, Lake Geneva (Wisconsin) doesn’t look anything like Geneva (Switzerland).

You & Mickey seem to travel well together. What a beautiful place to go for a short "get-away". Restaurant tips are extraordinary. Looks like a beautiful day which makes the pictures stand out.

Do you pay an entrance to the beach? That's feels strange for me, as in Portugal we only pay if we want to rent chairs and shadow, or in a swimming pool. Lake Geneva looks like a great place to relax and learn some interesting facts (and shop!!).

What an interesting page! The cruise, shop, jewelery, and the prancing Ponies, so much to see & do! We found Bears in Vancouver that were painted by different artists, and scattered around the city, they were interesting too!

Good page, with nice tips and photos. The Cove of Lake Geneva looks like a great place to stay. Love the idea of an alternative to ivory, Tagua. Best Wishes for Christmas.

As usual your tips are very well written Dee! Sounds like you had a great time there with your friend, and also with Allan five years ago (the walk on the pier sounds very romantic)!
