If you love history as I do, then I suggest that you visit the Lakes Region Historical Society in Antioch. It's located in a very unusual locality but quite convenient, Antioch's Old Grade School Building at Main Street and Depot Street.
It's locally referred to as The School House Museum". It includes a Native American collection and artifacts from old local stores.
The problem is that they are only open on Saturdays from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm. But, it's sure worth taking the time to go on a Saturday to see all the old photographs, documents and other artifacts. They have pieced together the history not only of Antioch proper but of the surrounding "Lakes Region". You "see" homes, farms, transportation, etc. Thank goodness volunteers have restored and preserved so that all of us can learn about the history and culture that has preceded us.
Even if you cannot stop in on a Saturday, it's worth a visit to see the 1892 Antioch Grade School building, even from the outside.
Oh, yes, the Meeting House Museum on Main Street next to Antioch Floral is a Historic Site and is an award winning Restoration project owned and operated by the Lakes Region Historical Society. [See photo below and photo on tip about "sights of Antioch"].
I noticed online that Wendy Maston and Robin Kessell, sisters who grew up in the Antioch area have written a book about Antioch's history. They are both active members of the Lakes Region Historical Society and serve as president and corresponding secretary.
The society is slowly renovating this old school...another example of the power of volunteers in the area who wish to save the history, culture, and traditions of this unique village called Antioch. This society started in 1983 and has been helped by the community via donated "artifacts and pictures of early Antioch". Thank goodness for people who care.
Address: 817 North Main Street
While in Antioch, it's always fun to visit the Pickard Factory Outlet Store and Museum.. This is a real outlet store that is located on the factory premises. This is where you are able to purchase "high quality seconds and closeout products at a 40%-60% discount of retail value".
In their advertisements, they say that "China dealers say that Pickard's seconds are as 'flawless' as most manufacturers' first quality selections"
They carry all the Pickard dinnerware patterns plus patterns that were made especially for this outlet store only. They have items that are decorated for all the holidays.
Each month they feature undecorated china for everyday use. They also offer plate frames, stands, and hanger for displaying china. They have a web site, but they do not sell merchandise online. The only way to purchase is at the outlet store in Antioch.
Also within the store, they feature an Antique Museum that displays beautiful antique pieces of Pickard china. They also showcase special custom china service (made for Air Force One, United States Air Force, Blair House, and U.S. Embassies worldwide). Of course, none of these items in the museum are for sale.
They are open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm, but they are closed on all major holidays. And, yes, they do take personal checks, VISA, Master Card as well as Discover Card...Cash is always accepted.
