Name of Shop: What to Buy In Spain:
By now, most people realize that Spain is a wonderful place to purchase leather and shoes. The fashion houses in Madrid and Barcelona have flourished, and the demand for quality leather from Spain is high as is the desire to own a great pair of Spanish leather shoes.
Craft industries in Spain have become big business, particularly the colorful ceramics for which Spain is famous. For centuries, clay dishes, tiles, vases, and other ceramics with bright colors and beautiful designs have been crafted. The Moors influenced many of these designs [the Islamic religion does not allow craftspeople to represent humans in their artwork]. Large ceramics factories are located near the big cities of Valencia and Seville; however, small towns make their own pottery in distinctive styles, too.
Also, Spanish tiles are sold at El Rastro, Madrid's famous flea market.
Spain's wine and sherry businesses are important also. The sherry is exported to 120 countries around the world. It is desired by many, but especially the British, who have been importing it since the 16th century!
The traditional craft of lace-making is thriving again because of the tourist industry. I saw many people taking home lace items as a souvenir of Spain.
What To Buy: When you go to Spain, you don't need to purchase tacky souvenirs. Instead, purchase a nice leather belt, leather shoes, a lace tablecloth, some Majorcan pottery,El Rastro tiles, and the world-class sherry.
