Local Customs: Getting Your Hair Cut In London

While in London, I decided to have my hair cut. First I went to a small place near the hotel. What a disaster! I was in tears. My daughter Jill suggested that I go to a famous place such as Sassoon's, which I did. Sassoon is known for its structural and asymmetrical cuts. They were alarmed when they saw the "butchery" that had happened. But, they came to my rescue, and the photo shows that they were able to "save the day". It was the beginning of my wearing my hair short with the ears showing.
So, if you plan to have your hair cut, go to a well known place.

Local Customs: Boxing Day Holiday

While in London, Jill and I saw an interesting parade. I asked her why there was a parade on this day, and she told me that it's an unusual old holiday that the Londoners still keep, even though it's not so relevant anymore called Boxing Day.
It was the day that boxes (gifts) were given to servants for their services. If I recall correctly, I think it was on December 26.
Anyway, while we were enjoying the parade, a group of Cheerleaders from the United States marched and cheered their way by us. I just could not believe that here I was in London, and American Cheerleaders (high school) were in a parade here.
About ten years later, my great niece and her mother went to London so that she could march in that same parage. (She is a cheerleader in Vincennes, Indiana).
It's a small world

Local Customs: Phones in London

When I was in London, they were just beginning to replace the old, lovely red phoneboxes with the new, modern ones. It saddened me.
The Phoneboxes (In America, we call them Phonebooths), are abundant in London. They are usually on most street corners. As I said, there are two kinds: the old red ones and the new silver ones.
Most of the phoneboxes take coins and cards, but read carefully to make sure.
You are able to purchase the phonecard (British Telecom Phonecard) at newsstands and post offices.
Emergency: dial 999 or 112
For help, call the operator at 100.
Oh, yes, you usually are able to use your credit card to charge phone calls also.

Local Customs: Kindness of the Londoners

When my daughter Jill left home to live in London, Allan and I were quite worried. She was only 19 or 20 years old and by herself. I was so relieved when she became friends with a married couple (Bob and Gay Scruton) who took her "under wing" and watched out for her.
When I came to visit, Jill and I went to visit them. They were such a wonderful couple. They did not have children of their own, unless you count the darling little white Scottie dog that they had!
They served us dinner, and it was the only time in London that I ate my food with "glee" because it was so delicious.
This couple, and all the other Londoners whom I came in contact with while there for a week, went out of their way to be kind, helpful, and courteous. I was so impressed.
(I took this photo while visiting the couple who "kept an eye" on Jill while she was in London. This is Gay, and this is their lovely home.)
