Off The Beaten Path: Cleopatra's Needle

On the Victoria Embankment, the oldest monument in London, Cleopatra's Needle, stands nearly 60 feet high. It's made of pink Egyptian marble built in 1475 BC. This Obelisk was first erected in Heliopolis (now a suburb of Cairo) and is older than London itself! This monument was later moved to Alexandria where it remained for centuries.
It was presented to Britain in the early 1800s by theTurkish Viceroy of Egypt. It cost about 15,000 pounds to transport and was almost lost at sea.
Eventually, it was erected on the Victorian Embankment where a Victorian time capsule was buried underneath it. The time capsule includes a newspaper, set of coins, iron ropes, razor, box of pins, four Bibles in different languages, train timetable, and photographs of 12 of the most beautiful women of the day.
The reason I know so much about Cleopatra's Needle is because I'm so attracted to any Obelisk that when I see one, I try to discover all that I can about it.
