Out of the Shadows of Tuscany and Into the Light

Picturesque Umbria

Panoramic of Umbria's Countryside
At times, it seems difficult to know whether you are in Tuscany or Umbria. Both are beautiful; both boast of friendly, helpful people; both have medieval hill towns.

Remember that it is Umbria that has splendid mountains, gentle countrysides, and the huge Lake Trasimeno.

The places we visited in Umbria were:
SPOLETO surrounded by lovely woods and one of the steepest of the hill towns.

PERUGIA university town
which has lots of art and historic architecture.

ASSISI most famous of the towns in Umbria because of Saint Frances.

ORVIETO surrounded by
pretty vineyards and famous for its
Romanesque-Gothic cathedral.

TODI most medieval of
the hill towns in Umbria

LAKE TRASIMENO One of Italy's
largest lakes

TREVI thought to have the most spectacular setting of all the hill towns

SPELLO known for its frescoes in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore

We were told that an earthquake hit Umbria during the autumn of 1997, but by 2001, we were not aware of any damage. The one exception might have been Spello because it was totally under construction.

I did think that Umbria was a small region, but it makes up for its size with its abundance of natural beauty , wonderful art, and religious relics.
