We loved Bellagio and for good reason. It is at the tip of the peninsula at the point where Lake Como forks into three directions.
We drove and took the picturesque lakeshore road, S583. I've heard that it can be quite crowded in the summer. It is narrow, indeed, and we saw some tourist busses have great difficulty. Two such busses met on this narrow road and could not pass. One had to back up, so traffic was tied up for awhile.
We drove through the Piedmont Mountains and went through the town of Como
.
Bellagio is a pretty old town. We especially liked the steep streets, lakeside piazza and promenade, earth-toned buildings, cobblestone lanes, and distant, snow-capped mountains.
Ironically, even though Bellagio is a tourist town, it did not seem "touristy". All the people have not marred its natural beauty.
What made it more fun was that Allan's sister, Jayne, came for ten days of our 68 days in Italy and was in Bellagio with us.
This is a picture of Jayne, Allan's sister, and Allan as they walk up one of the steep, cobbled streets after shopping in this delightful town.
Beautiful mosaics abound in little shops as well as lots of unique leather gifts, beautiful wool sweaters, and elegant paper goods.
This is one of the views we had from our Hotel Florence room. What a combination with the lake and the mountains.
This hotel was right next door to a luxury hotel with the same views for half the price. What a deal, huh?
See Tip on this Hotel
- Pros:Natural beauty of Lake Como and surrounding Mts.
- Cons:None that we found
- In a nutshell:A pretty old town with shopping, fine restarurants, and some reasonable hotels.

Me again, coming back for another look at your informative and enthusiastic tips on Bellagio. I've been through this region on the train, but never stopped for a proper visit.
How great was that to take sister-in-law. Another Italian "gem" where you found a great hotel, place to eat, shop, walk, and learn.
Small but informative pages, Dee. A truly beautiful little spot. You always find delightful places to stay and to eat. Looks as though this is a real "keeper".
Planning to explore Lago di Como in cold December. Could not miss another one of your fantastic Italy pages. Wow, 68 days in Italy, that's a dream!
Nice little page Dee I do enjoy nature & would love to see Lake Como
Another great page of you
oh i am missing italy - i had to have a little taste
Dee, your hotel sounds fantastic and now I know where to get a fabulous massage if I ever return to Bellagio! Wonderful tips!
From what I've seen, the area around Lake Como looks like the prettiest place in Italy.
You do beautiful Bellagio proud, Dee. Thanks. We stayed across the lake and boated over for lunch and shopping. Wonderful!
