"AT THE END OF THE WATER" I love Occoquan. It's quaintness, the fact that it's at the head of the tidewater basin of the Chesapeake, and the history that surrounds Occoquan, plus the fact that it was considered the "End of the Water" and now is considered the "Head of the Tidewater". If you know Virginia's history, then you would understand why it was called the "the end" and not the "head". Ask yourself this: Do rivers flow North or South? A tobacco warehouse was built circa 1736, and the first automated grist mill in the US was born here, that transported grains to Alexandria, VA and then to the markets of the West Indies. It became an area of commerce and entrepreneurial spirit. |

Court94403 Tue Oct 20, 2009 05:29 UTC Madigan's sounds good! I am booking my plane ticket now!!! | travelgourmet Wed Oct 14, 2009 09:00 UTC Zooni, Great little tour of this town's shops. Amazing what some wineries will bottle as wine. More amazing are the people who try to sell off wine to you. Ah, yes, the finest wines east of the Mississippi. Show me the spittoon. lol | tropicrd Fri Oct 9, 2009 04:56 UTC Love your pages on this very interesting place with an interesting name--would love to visit one day. Dorrise | KiKitC Sat Aug 29, 2009 22:12 UTC I do love visiting the small, waterfront towns in Delmarva and Virginia. It's incredible how a name could sound so beautiful when spoken, but translated is as plain as anywhere. Thank you for the intro. |
