| | Stockholm is a wonderful city surrounded by water. There is an abundance of things to see and do in the beautiful capitol of Sweden.
Since its my home town, I don't really know what its like to be a visitor here. To be honest, I haven't done any of the major attractions or sightseeing since I was a kid. Therefore, I recommend that you visit a proper Stockholm sight to get more information on what one's expected to see and do whilst visiting the city.
I can instead tell you about the Stockholm that I know and love, and give tips on where locals like myself like to go. |
Sodermalm - The Southside Stockholm is built on several different islands with bridges linking them all together. Most of my tips and recommendations will be from the southern island Sodermalm, the best island in my opinion, that's also where I happen to live.
Until the late eighties, the Southside was the working-class part of town, where those less fortunate had to live. Today its quite the opposite. It has grown in both size and population, and has become one of the most sought after areas in town.
This is not hard to understand with all it has to offer. The parks, the squares, the beaches... The many bars, cafes, restaurants and clubs attract a young, "hip" crowd. The shopping here is excellent with lots of funky clothes- and design shops, as-well as cool record shops.
Even though many of the property prices are now amongst the highest in the city, it still has a relaxed, artsy, hippy-like feel to it. (There aren't as many yuppies here as on the other islands) What ultimately makes the Southside so different from the rest of Stockholm is the atmosphere! There's a nice, friendly vibe here. The Southside is the soul of Stockholm!
(Remember this is just my opinon, so don't hate me if you prefer a different part of town) | | |
| | Best Time to Visit Although Stockholm is an all-year-round destination, I would highly recommend coming in the spring or summer.
The winters are so long, dark and cold, so a lot of people tend to get slightly depressed and just stay at home all the time.
In the spring people start coming out. There will literally be people everywhere, just basking in the sun. Its not only the climate that becomes warmer. The people seem to get happier and friendlier as the sun heats up the city.
Another reason for coming in the summer is to experience the Light! The sun sets around 11 pm, only to rise again at about 2 am (depending on the date in question). It is quite amazing! The winters are the exact opposite. Sun up at 9 am, sun down at 3 pm. So you can't blame us for feeling a bit on the downside during wintertime.
Whenever you come, I'm sure you'll have a splendid time in a splendid city! |
