Absolutely beautiful. Also, not as expensive as the horror stories may have you believe. Sure there are a few places that will happily part you from your childrens college fund but a lot of the places are very reasonable. Getting to St Marks square is half of the fun and although there are arrows painted on walls and on little boards everywhere, it is still unlikely that you will take exactly the same route home again. The church itself has a great atmosphere, a very "used" and "aged" feel. I personally liked it as much as San Pietro !

For a rather fabulous view over Venice... well the best view actually. Buy a ticket and ascend the clock tower in the main square. It offers 360 degree views over the city and they are, in a word, spectacular !!! Late afternoon/dusk is a good time to go. Don't forget to take a look at the actual bells too as with all the views, they are easily overlooked !!!

The most famous parts of Venice... Waterways and Gondolas. Alas, owing to potenially extortionate prices, we declined a ride in a gondola, we used water taxis which also offer great views. The atmosphere is unique, no cars means that you could be at any point throughout history, it is really unusual. The grand canal itself is really nice with lots of restaurants (tourist prices) along the embankment near the famous "Rialto" Bridge.

Murano glass is probably the most famous glass factory in the world. You can go on a free tour and see the glass blowing, this is generally followed by a tour of the shop where (should you decide to...) you can buy keyrings, glass sets, abstract glass toys and enormous chandaliers... I opted for a rather pretty keyring as anything bigger would oprobably get broken in 5 minutes !!! A lot of hotels have a free boat ride over to Murano. There is a water bus service that can bring you back via all the main stops.

The Masquarade Ball in Venice happens in February, unfortunately I have not been to see it as yet but I fully intend to go. Whilst walking around the streets and alleys of Venice, you will se countless shops selling period costume and masks, prices vary but they are all really beautiful and intricate.
