El Cuco is a four hours drive from San Salvador, more or less and the drive will take you past breathtaking views of the near perfect San Miguel Volcano, just that would make it worth the trip but . . .
Once you get to El Cuco you will discover gray sand beaches, nearly free of tourists. You are more likely to have semi-wild horses, cows, and dogs pass you on the beach than other tourists. There are great waves for surfing, and coconuts and lemons to be pulled off the tree and mixed with some rum. No fancy hotels, no luxerous service, just a perfect beach all to yourself.
