As usual, I was looking for soulful house clubs when I came to LA. However, unlike New York, you will struggle to find any prominent ones in Los Angeles. Clubs are based almost entirely around hip-hop and rock music. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it means the few house clubs that do exist have a nice underground vibe about them.

Came across Deep at The Vanguard on the internet, and judging by recent DJ appearances it sounded like exactly what we were looking for. On a regular basis they've got world class talent of Miguel Migs, Louie Vega, Frankie Feliciano, Ben Watt, Knuckles & Morales. I was disappointed to find out we had Jason Bentley (WHO?) to look forward to.

Nice warehouse style main room, with booths and seating surrounding the dance floor. Upstairs opens out into an outdoor smoking / chill out patio. Had the usual variety of clubbers, from cool hybrid house / hip hop dancers, to some geeks throwing some really bad 1980's robotic moves. Really quite odd (in a good way) as no-one is drunk or on drugs - an absolute impossibility in a UK club.

Think entrance was about $10 each. Check out the website for upcoming performances, although don't bother asking a question on the message board as it'll take 6 weeks to get an answer.

Dress Code: As usual for clubs like this in the US, they probably state a relaxed dress code, but in reality there is none.

Would definately come back here if I'm lucky enough to return to LA.

    Other Nightclubs: General Info

CitySearch run regular polls for the best nightclubs and bars in a city. Their ratings (out of 10) are usually fairly spot on, but now and again I suspect they get hijacked by someone with a vested interest in the establishment, who somehow ups the rating to unfeasible and inaccurate proportions. However, a superb search function and editors picks makes this one of my favourite all-round sites.

Basically a review site, but with links to some amazing guest lists, Club Planet gives the day-by-day low down on Los Angeles (and other cities) nightlife. The pick for me was the free guest list to get entrance to one of LA's best celebrity haunts, Spider Club @ Avalon, even if it is only for a Wednesday night.

With similar info, but in a very un-user friendly style is LA Clubber. It requires you to register for full access, although I doubt it is worth the time, effort and increased spam that will no doubt flood your way.

If you're still stuck, I suggest asking a question on Inspiration LA. Some of the friendliest people on the net, and they pointed me in the direction of several parties whilst we were in Los Angeles.

Also, the legendary Zagat produce a indispensable pocket guide to nightlife with guides to the best clubs and bars to suit the pocket and mindset of every hedonist on Earth. Costs about $11 if you subscribe (which I fully recommend you do anyway), and is one is the most comprehensive, easy to use guides I have ever seen.

Looks like you know how to live it up, Tom. Nice restaurant choices. Maple Drive is now on my list of places to try. ~ Andy
