South Africa, Africa's melting pot

by Pieter11 - last update: Sep 21, 2006

At a roadcrossing in Cape Town
The fourth and last country I visited during my 2006-trip through Southern Africa was South Africa. The weathiest and most developed country of black Africa, one of the most populated and definitely one of the most diverse countries of the continent.

I only visited the westside of the country, ending in Cape Town, what can't possibily give me a complete image of this huge country. But what really impressed me is the enormous variety of cultures in South Africa. You can clearly see the mixture of Brittish, Dutch and African cultures in language (like the sign at the picture: Afrikaans and English), architecture, cooking etc.

Cape Town is even more extreme. This city really is one meltingpot of African and European cultures, even with bits of American and Asian influences. This give the city its very own identity and makes it a great place to end a trip through this part of Africa.

Oh, so I can leave a comment now? :D Very nice summary of your trip and the mix of cultures. And very beautiful pics - as always - especially Boulders Bay and the Goudsblommen :)
